By using well-crafted language and policies in our course syllabi, we can help to instill within students a willingness to persist.  Our course policies should emphasize and support the notion that learning takes sustained effort, that effective learning might require switching strategies and habits when needed, and that seeking help when needed is normal and encouraged. We'll look at the "High Hope" syllabus model from Cia Verschelden's 2017 book, Bandwidth Recovery: Helping Students Reclaim Cognitive Resources Lost to Poverty, Racism, and Social Marginalization, and Motivate Lab's "Request to Retest" form.

I'm interested in embodied cognition, experiential learning, and coaching for faculty and educational developers. Happy to chat with anyone about ideas from my book, Minding Bodies: how physical space, sensation, and movement affect learning (WVU Press, 2021).
